Troubleshooting

Where are my logs?

Where Brainwrite writes its logs on Windows, macOS and Linux, what each file holds, and how to share them safely.

The quickest way: Settings → General → Diagnostics → Open logs folder. It opens the folder in Explorer or Finder and shows its path.

On this computer

WindowsmacOSLinux
App logs%APPDATA%\Brainwrite\logs (that is C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Brainwrite\logs)~/Library/Logs/Brainwrite~/.config/Brainwrite/logs
Bots, chats and their history%USERPROFILE%\.brainwrite (C:\Users\<you>\.brainwrite)~/.brainwrite~/.brainwrite

In the app logs folder:

  • server.log: the app's own messages and everything Brainwrite's local server prints: engines starting and stopping, sign-in problems, errors. This is the one support asks for.
  • desktop-crashes.log: crashes of the app itself. It is emptied when it reaches 512 KB.
  • updater.log: what the updater checked, downloaded and installed.

%APPDATA% is a hidden folder: paste the path into the address bar of File Explorer, or press Win+R and type %APPDATA%\Brainwrite\logs.

The data folder holds your bots and conversations, including each conversation's event history in events\. It is not a log to share: it contains what you and your bots wrote.

Sharing them with support

Settings → General → Diagnostics → Export Diagnostics… saves one text file with the app's version, which features are on, and the most recent part of server.log, desktop-crashes.log and updater.log. API keys, passwords, tokens, the parameters of every web address (where sign-in codes travel), cookies and private keys are replaced with «redacted …» in every line. Read the file before you send it.

Avoid sending the raw log files or anything from the data folder unless support asks for a specific one.

My Cloud

My Cloud keeps its own logs on the Cloud machine, and nothing on your computer holds them. Tell Support what went wrong on My Cloud and roughly when.
